The StEG - Duplex was an express train - tender locomotive of the State Railroad Company (StEG) Austria-Hungary .

This locomotive had four cylinders that acted on the driving axle offset by 180 °, so that the fluctuations of the machine could be kept low without counterweights. This system was devised by John Haswell , implemented in 1862 for the last locomotive of a twelve-piece delivery to the StEG ( StEG I 158-169 ) and presented at the world exhibition in London that same year .

In order to test the effectiveness of the arrangement, the machine was fixed to the running wheels and lifted by chains so that the driving wheels were suspended in the air. Suspended like this, it was set in motion, with the wheels turning at approx. 400 revolutions per minute, which corresponds to a speed of almost 160 km / h. There were only minor fluctuations. Another locomotive with a conventional drive, which had been suspended in the same way, showed such fluctuations at 70 km / h that the experiment had to be aborted.

In practice, it turned out that the locomotive ran noticeably smoother than the other machines of the same design at speeds over 90 km / h on straight stretches. However, due to the large overhangs at both ends, the pace was not as smooth as one had hoped. Since it was also too weak for heavy trains, no reorders were made.

On delivery the locomotive was given the road number 169, in the second scheme of the StEG the number 14 and finally in the third scheme the designation 1051. Its name was changed from DUPLEX to ZINNWALD . It was retired in 1904.
