St Aldhelm's Chapel
The St. Aldhelm's Chapel is a Norman Chapel at St Alban's Head in the parish of Worth Matravers on the Isle of Purbeck , in the county of Dorset , on the south coast of England .
The unusual shape and orientation of St Aldhelm's Chapel suggests that it was initially not built as a church, but for another purpose, such as a watchtower. It is an unadorned, square quarry stone building with a flat pyramid roof . The walls are stabilized by overhanging retaining walls. The portal is highlighted with a Romanesque double round arch. The interior is structured by a central pillar from which the four ribbed vaults extend.
The chapel is dedicated to St. Aldhelm , Bishop of Sherborne , who died in 709. It could have been built at the beginning of the twelfth century. It was abandoned at the beginning of the 17th century, restored at the end of the 19th century and used again for religious services.
Worth Matravers, the seat of the parish, is a small village about six kilometers west of Swanage and five kilometers south of Corfe Castle . St Aldhelm's Chapel stands in a low ring wall about two kilometers from the village center.
