History and architecture

A chapel existed here during the Anglo-Saxon colonization of England, and a tower was added around the 11th century. By 1308 Wilton was under the Taunton Priory , and pastoral care was under the pastor of St Mary Magdalene in Taunton . Richard Carver extensively renovated and expanded the church in the late 1830s. Two bays were added to the nave and two chapels in the choir , each in a neo-Gothic style. The tower was demolished and rebuilt in 1853, and J. Houghton Spencer carried out further renovations inside in 1870.

Although parts of the church still have the brickwork from the Anglo-Saxon period with long and short stones, most of the structure is Gothic architecture from the 19th century, which was created in the course of Carver's work. The steeple, like many other Somerset village churches, is Perpendicular Style ; it has two floors and buttresses placed diagonally, two window openings for the bell and a reinforced parapet . The sacristy is a little younger, it was built around the turn of the 20th century. The church is made of quarried stone built and hewn stone, and the roof is made of slate .
