history

The Armenian Council of Ministers passed a decree on May 16, 1919 to establish a university that should consist of four faculties , History & Linguistics , Economics , Physics and Medicine . Since no suitable building could be found in Jeweran, the university opened on January 31, 1920, initially in parts in what was then Alexandropol , today's Gyumri. It was not until the autumn of 1920 that the then Minister of Education signed the specific document for the establishment of the University of Medicine. This was initially not implemented due to the political circumstances: On November 29, 1920, the Armenian Socialist Soviet Republic was proclaimed. A public health commissariat was installed by the Revolutionary Committee of the Second Republic; on November 3, 1921, the establishment of the medical school in the city hospital of Yerevan , the first institution for the training of medical personnel in Armenia. From this the State Medical University developed over five years until 1927. The renaming from "Volksuniversität" to "Staatliche Universität" took place in 1922. While the Institute for Anatomy and Physiology has been located in the university building since its foundation, the institute management had to stay in the city hospital for several years due to insufficient space. In addition, the Department of Pharmacology was relocated to the City Council Building for Cultural Affairs.

The corresponding structural measures were implemented until the 1930s. Today the campus consists of four buildings.

In 1927 the first class of 32 graduates left the university.

The scientific library was opened in 1930, and since 1958 the university newspaper "Apaga Bjihsk" has been published here.

On May 25, 1989, Mkhitar Heratsi was added as the institution's namesake.

After the university had grown as part of the Soviet Union - for example, the Faculty of Pharmacy was opened in 1972 and the Faculty of Pediatrics as early as 1958 - Armenia declared an independent republic in 1991, which meant a period of restructuring of several years for the university.
