The most innovative company in Austria has been awarded the State Prize for Innovation every year since 1979 by the Federal Ministry for Digitization and Business Location (BMDW). The award belongs to the group of state awards of the Republic of Austria .

Every year since 1979, companies have received the State Prize for Innovation, the highest award for particularly innovative achievements.

The Austria Wirtschaftsservice Gesellschaft (AWS) - the financing and development bank of the Republic of Austria - organizes the State Prize for Innovation and the special prizes ECONOVIUS and VERENA on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Digitization and Business Location and in cooperation with numerous federal state partners.

The cooperation partners in the federal states identify their participants through regional innovation competitions and report them to the aws. A jury of experts selects the max. six best projects that are officially nominated for the State Prize for Innovation.

The nominated projects will be presented to the public at a festive award ceremony and awarded a nomination certificate by the Federal Minister for Digitization and Business Location. In addition to the nominations, the awarding of the State Prize for Innovation to the winning company by the Federal Minister for Digitization and Business Location is the highlight of the evening. By winning the State Prize for Innovation, a company receives the highest recognition and distinction for particularly innovative achievements.

The ECONOVIUS is awarded to the most innovative small or medium-sized enterprise (SME) as part of the state award event. This special award is presented and supported by the Austrian Chamber of Commerce.

Since 2012, the special "VERENA - powered by VERBUND" prize has also been awarded as part of the state prize event. The special award "VERENA powered by VERBUND" honors companies that have implemented innovative projects with universities, technical colleges or non-university research institutions in the areas of energy efficiency / management, renewable energies, e-mobility and energy systems.

Conditions of participation

Austrian companies that have developed innovative products, processes or services and brought them to market can take part. The implementation of the innovation should have largely been completed; at least initial experience of the effects of the innovation should already be available.

Regional innovation prizes are held by the cooperation partners in each federal state. The three best projects of each innovation award qualify for the national innovation award. Applications are sent to the submission office of the respective federal state in which the company is based.

Jury evaluation

The focus of the jury evaluation is the evaluation of the product, process or service itself, relevant business data and the impact of the innovation on the market, the environment and the economy. When judging, the jury pays particular attention to:

  • Innovation: originality, sophistication or novelty of the project, degree of innovation
  • Entrepreneurial performance: the entrepreneurial risk, innovation development costs, measures to promote an innovation-friendly working atmosphere
  • Effects of the innovation on: the benefits for customers, the general public, ecology and the environment, market opportunities as well as cooperation and economic effects

Doping

All companies nominated for the State Prize for Innovation receive a certificate as well as an attractive media presence in print and digital media. In addition, the nominated companies will receive a video clip about the submitted project, produced especially for the award ceremony.

The winning company of the State Prize for Innovation is named the State Prize for Innovation by the Federal Minister for Digitization and Business Location by handing over the state certificate. In addition to the image enhancement, the State Prize Winner can expect an artistically valuable trophy, which was specially designed by the University of Applied Arts for the State Prize for Innovation, as well as an attractive media presence.

The special ECONOVIUS prize is endowed with prize money of EUR 12,000, which is made available by the Austrian Chamber of Commerce.

Award winners

  • 2005: The Styrian company Efkon (STMK) received the award for developing the ISO-CALM infrared standard. This standard is used for vehicle-to-vehicle communication.
  • 2006: Special machine manufacturer for the flat glass industry Lisec (Lower Austria) developed a fully automatic thin glass tempering system with which it is possible for the first time to temper extremely thin flat glass (less than 3 mm) under production conditions, even with a wide variety of coatings and shapes.
  • 2007: The Burgenland Lumitech Produktion und Entwicklung GmbH (BLGD) developed an LED module that can replace standard light bulbs, standard halogen lamps, standard lights, etc. The LED module is around 30% more efficient than the already efficient LED technology.
  • 2008: The Upper Austrian company Fronius developed a process (DeltaSpot) that enables the automated joining of aluminum and steel in lightweight automotive construction.
  • 2009: The Styrian company Binder + Co AG won with the development of the first industrial system for sorting out special glass from broken glass.
  • 2010: The Styrian company ACC Austria GmbH received the state award for the "Delta" cooling compressor.
  • 2011: The Linz company Anger Machining GmbH received the state award for the development of "HCX Technologie" - a system for the machining of precision parts in series production. The company ACC Austria from Fürstenfeld received the award for the "Delta" cooling compressor. The heart of every fridge and freezer can save up to 50 percent on energy costs.
  • 2012: The Upper Austrian company TRUMPF Maschinen Austria GmbH & Co. KG received the state prize for developing the high-speed bending cell "TruBend Cell 7000" - a new, fully automatic bending cell for bending small parts made of sheet steel.
  • 2013: The company Infineon Technologies Austria AG , based in Carinthia, received the state award for the project "Power300 - Power Semiconductors on 300mm Wafers".
  • 2014: The company MED-EL Elektromedizinische Geräte Gesellschaft mbH . received the state award for the world's first active bone conduction implant "Bonebridge".
  • 2015: The company voestalpine Stahl GmbH received the state award for the "hs-ultraform®" project.
  • 2016: The Styrian company ams AG received the state award for the project "Optical sensor family from ams integrates contactless gesture recognition".
  • 2017: The Upper Austrian company EV Group received the state award for the project "SmartNIL - Process and Large-Scale Production System for Nano-Embossed Lithography".
  • 2018: The Salzburg company W&H Dentalwerk Bürmoos GmbH received the state award for the project "Primea Advanced Air - a technological leap in dental treatment".
  • 2019: The Lower Austrian company In-Vision Digital Imaging Optics GmbH received the state award for the project "Intelligent exposure machine for serial 3D printing"
