history

As a joint project between the city of Amsterdam and the personnel service provider Randstad , construction of the hull on the Damen Oranjewerf , Amsterdam, began in December 1997 . The ship was designed by the architect Gerard Dijkstra based on the old clippers, in particular the frigate ship Amsterdam from the mid-19th century, but the use of modern materials such as steel for the hull and technical equipment was not dispensed with. After completion of the hull, the further expansion of the ship was continued in front of the Maritime Museum in Amsterdam.

The ship was built mainly by job seekers and school leavers, who were given an education and a new perspective. The cost amounted to the equivalent of about 10 million  euros .

In the summer, the ship was finally named Stad Amsterdam and presented to the public at Sail Amsterdam 2000. In 2005 she was the flagship of the Sail in Amsterdam.

Since then she has been on the world's oceans as a school and charter ship for guests and also takes part in regattas and sailing meetings. In 2001 the Stad Amsterdam won the Cutty Sark Tall Ships' Race .
