The Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the central Le Plateau district of the Ivorian city of Abidjan . It is nicknamed Le Félicia and Stade FHB . The ASEC Mimosas football club plays its home games in the sports facility. It is also the venue for matches of the Ivorian national football team .
history
The facility, inaugurated in 1952, now has a capacity of 35,000 spectators. At first it was named Stade Géo André , named after Géo André (1889–1943), a French athlete and rugby union player. In 1964 it was rebuilt and received its current structure. A new name came along with the renovation. It was named after Félix Houphouët-Boigny , the first President of the Ivory Coast (1960 to 1993).
In 1984 the Stade FHB was one of the two venues for the African Football Championship . A total of nine games of the tournament took place here, including six group games, a semi-final, the game for third place and the final. In 2009, the facility was completely renovated with a view to hosting the first African Nations Cup , which took place in February and March of that year.
On March 29, 2009 there was a tragic accident during the World Cup qualifier Ivory Coast against Malawi . A wall collapsed under the pressure of the crowd pouring into the interior, killing 19 people and injuring over 130.
On January 1, 2013, a mass panic broke out near the stadium after the New Year's Eve fireworks, in which 61 people were killed and 200 others were injured.
The Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny was renovated for the 2017 Francophonie Games .
