The Josy Barthel Stadium ( French Stade Josy Barthel , formerly the Municipal Stadium ) in Luxembourg City is the national football stadium of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg . It is the venue for the home games of the Luxembourg national football team and, in the absence of any UEFA- compliant venues in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the European Cup matches for Luxembourg clubs.
history
The national stadium belongs to the city of Luxembourg. It was opened in 1931 and completely renovated from 1989 to 1990. Today the sports facility offers spectators 8,054 seats, of which only the seats on the main stand are covered. In addition to the football field made of natural grass , it has a six-lane athletics facility . It is located in the west of the capital on Arloner Straße, which runs behind the main rank. Behind the back straight is a training ground with floodlights and a tennis facility with several courts. The other surrounding buildings reach so far that, in addition to the paying spectators, many residents also have a good view of the field.
Since July 1993, the stadium has been named after the Luxembourgish athlete and politician Joseph "Josy" Barthel , who died in July 1992, and who was the 1952 Olympic champion in the 1,500 meter run .
New national stadium
In March 2013, the renovation of the stadium was decided at a congress of the football association FLF. In January 2014, the plans for the renovation were discarded and the construction of a new national stadium was preferred. After the completion of the Stade National de Luxembourg , the outdated Josy Barthel Stadium will be demolished.
