The ship was on the shipyard J. Frerichs & Co in Einswarden under the hull number 449 attached to Kiel . The launch took place on April 12, 1927 under the name of Stadt Rüstringen , the completion took place in May of that year, as was the delivery to the Jade-Seebäderdienst AG shipping company in Rüstringen.

Her length was 54.20 meters, she was 8.04 meters wide and had a draft of 1.78 meters. It was measured at 410 GRT and had a design displacement of around 465 tons. The drive consisted of a triple expansion machine from the Frerichswerft, which had an output of 600 hp . This acted on a screw ; the steamer reached a speed of 12.0 knots . As a passenger ship, she had a crew of 21 officers and men and could carry 680 passengers.

history

In the liner service of the Jade seaside resort service

After the acceptance run on May 21, 1927, the Jade seaside service took over the ship and immediately put it into service from Wilhelmshaven to Wangerooge. In addition to the passengers, the steamer also carried mail, food and other freight. In addition, the ship made trips to Heligoland. The ship did the job without any complaints. To improve maneuverability, the city of Rüstringen received a second triple expansion machine with an additional screw around 1935.

Then a major overhaul was due in 1938, for which the seaside resort service could not afford the costs. The shipping company had to hand over the ship to a rescue company with the participation of the city of Wilhelmshaven, which became the new owner. The Jade seaside resort service also managed the ship. After the beginning of the Second World War , the shipping company had to significantly reduce trips to the island.

Kriegsmarine traffic steamer

In 1940 the Navy took over the ship and kept the name. The manning was now given as 23 officers and men. During a trip to Wangerooge, the ship ran into a mine in the Wangerooger fairway on June 27, 1940 and sank, killing six crew members. The Navy lifted the steamer and continued to use it. On October 9, 1944, the ship finally sank in Hamburg due to a British air raid.
