The Freital City Library is the municipal library of the large district town of Freital in the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains ( Saxony ) district. It is open to the public and has around 4900 readers (as of 2013). The city library now offers around 55,000 media, including books, videos, CD-ROMs, records, cassettes, CDs, DVDs, e-books and magazines.

Locations

The main library is located in Freital- Döhlen at Bahnhofstrasse 34 on the first floor of the City Center . There is also a branch in the Zauckerode district (Wilsdruffer Straße 67d) in a former building of the Oppelschacht .

history

In the second half of the 19th century, public libraries were established in the villages of the Döhlen basin . This led to the establishment of libraries in Döhlen (1876), Deuben (1880), Niederhäslich (1883), Potschappel (1885) and Burgk (1902). These libraries were often housed together with school libraries in municipal offices or in the village schools and in some cases had only small stocks.

After the unification of the industrial communities Deuben, Döhlen and Potschappel in 1921, the village libraries soon merged. On June 30, 1922, the municipal library was founded from its holdings and those of the Central Workers' Library and the “Reading Hall for Plauenschen Grund”. In the following years the stock increased, also through further incorporations into the city of Freital . After the Second World War , the city library moved to the Neumarkt in the town house of Dresdner Straße 209 in 1950 .

After the reunification , another move was necessary, the main office was housed in a villa opposite the old location in 1992. The flood of the century in 2002 caused great damage to this building and the children's library in Wehrstrasse, so that it had to move to its current location. The main library stayed in the dilapidated villa until 2011, but then moved to the Panschau gallery to make room for the demolition of the building and the construction of the Freital technology and start-up center.

In December 2015 the Freital city council decided to move the library again to the “City Center” (Bahnhofstrasse 34) on Neumarkt. The two branch offices are also to be combined in this location, but initially only the previous children's library with the target group of 6- to 14-year-olds moved from the listed building Dresdner Straße 283 ( Deuben district ) to the main library; the Zaucker or branch office will remain for the time being open. The newly occupied premises were opened on November 17, 2016.

Since 2019, the Zauckerode branch of the city library has housed one of over 100 "media.labs".
