The city ​​gallery is a joint facility of the Markdorfer Kunstverein, founded in 2005, and the city of Markdorf .

On April 8, 2006, the inauguration of the newly designed rooms in the historic old town of Markdorf took place with a first exhibition. Since then, four to six mostly themed exhibitions have been shown in the city gallery each year, such as B. the exhibition with artist ceramics from the Majolika Manufaktur Karlsruhe , an exhibition on the subject of "paper" or "transience". The aim of the art association is to give the broadest possible public access to art - lectures, guided tours, readings and concerts take place in parallel. Artists like u. a. Renata Jaworska , Roland Peter Litzenburger , Dieter Krieg , Felix Droese , HAP Grieshaber , Armin Göhringer , Harald Häuser , Axel Heil , Uwe Lindau , Josef Bücheler , Norbert Bisky , Markus Lüpertz , Hans Peter Reuter , Thomas Lehnerer , Heinz Pelz , Werner Pokorny , Helmut Sturm , Hans Thoma , Abderrazak Sahli and Wolf Pehlke were partly presented in solo and group exhibitions. Since 2010, a section of the international experimental biennial has been shown in the city gallery every two years .
