City chapel Memmingen
The Stadtkapelle Memmingen is a wind orchestra from the Upper Swabian city of Memmingen . Its history goes back to the year 1410. It has been directed by Stadtkapellmeister Markus Peter since 2019.
history
"Stadtpfeifer und -musici" were first mentioned in the chronicles in 1410. Since then, music groups have been reported in the chronicles and minutes in the city archives, for example in 1602 from the musical accompaniment of the morning and evening sermons in St. Martin. From 1613 the city employed three paid wind players and four from 1624. They also had to do the guard duty on the Martinsturm. Since the Thirty Years' War , the music groups have mainly accompanied the Meistersinger and the performances of the Swabian State Theater . They gave music lessons in the city's Latin schools. In 1655, Christoph Schorer established another music association, the Collegium Musicum . Every fortnight, the urban upper class of clergy, lawyers, doctors and other citizens met to sing and play musical instruments together. The chapel accompanied the service in St. Martin as early as 1659 . In 1660 the group already had 56 members. In 1662 the band withdrew from church music after a dispute with the clergy. However, it is repeatedly reported in the sources of the city archive that the Collegium occasionally accompanied the service with music until 1755.
In 1970 the conductor Herbert Becker transformed the leisure band into a high-level wind orchestra. From 1994 to 2019 Johnny Ekkelboom directed the band as conductor and city music director. Under him she successfully took part in many musical competitions. His successor since June 1, 2019 is Markus Peter. The band consists of around 65 musicians.
