Portrait of Christoph Schorer

Christoph Schorer (born December 2, 1618 in Memmingen ; † February 12, 1671 ibid) was a German physician , poet and astrologer of the Baroque period .

Life

The multi-talented Swabian doctor was the son of a lawyer. After finishing school at the Latin School in Memmingen, he enrolled at the medical faculty in Strasbourg in 1639 , where he soon got in touch with the members of the Sincere Fir Society , especially Johann Matthias Schneuber and Jesaias Rompler . Its linguistic society aroused in him an interest in clearing the German language of foreign words, which in 1643 inspired him to publish his often used language spoiler. Even here he was indulging in his astrological hobby when he began the annual publication of a forecast icon in which he predicted the events of the coming year from the stars. 30 volumes of this popular publication have appeared.

A series of study trips took him via Basel to the famous medical school in Montpellier and finally to Padua , where he received his doctorate in 1654. When he returned to his hometown, he succeeded his grandfather as city physician and published a number of medical and hygienic manuals for domestic use in German in order to reach the common people.
