Sightseeing ([ sɑ́jtsɪjɪŋ ]; German  "sightseeing, visitor guidance " ) is an Anglicism that in tourism stands for the sightseeing of cultural evidence and other sights in cities and nature . In this sense, sightseeing is a tourist (sightseeing) trip or trip that serves this purpose exclusively or at least predominantly.

General

Typical sightseeing tours are city tours and day trips , which are carried out at interesting tourist destinations by coach companies founded for this purpose , also with a tourist guide . These usually operate from a fixed starting point according to a seasonally different fixed timetable . In larger cities there are also several "lines" on different routes with several stops, also from different providers. They also offer day tickets for free use of their line (s) as hop-on-hop-off , which allows passengers to discover the city's sights. With such an offer, passengers can get on and off whenever they want and get on another bus from the same provider on the same route. In some cases, municipal tourist offices or the tourist information office arrange such trips, especially for day visitors.

The vehicles used for the tours are often converted, but also specially designed double-decker buses with (partially) open or also covered upper deck, which offer a good all-round view during the journey. Also popular in smaller towns are the trains with road tires specially designed for tours , which are pulled by a tractor unit “disguised” as a small locomotive .

In places with extensive waterways such as Amsterdam , Berlin , Hamburg or Cologne, there are also tours with special passenger ships , so-called tour boats or barges . Harbor tours are offered in large port cities , often as part of a cooperation between city tour bus and shipping companies.

Special forms

For some time now, “guided cycling and hiking tours” have been offered in major European cities and in many holiday resorts .

For active runners and joggers, sightrunning is being offered in more and more large cities, a kind of "ongoing city tour".
