history

In 1862 the municipal gas station for household and trade was founded, around 1870 the water works were affiliated. In 1902 the Jenaer Elektricitätswerke Aktien-Gesellschaft was founded to distribute electricity and operate the tram. In 1952 the VEB Energieversorgung Jena was created, which was transferred via various intermediate stages to the VEB Energiekombinat Süd (1970) and in 1990/91 to the Ostthüringer Energieversorgung AG.

Stadtwerke Jena GmbH was founded on April 23, 1991 with the shareholders Stadt Jena (51%) and Saarberg-Fernwärme GmbH (49%). In 1992 the municipal utility took over the district heating and gas supply in Jena, followed in 1993 by taking over the management of the Jena water and wastewater association. In 2000 the Stadtwerke Jena and Pößneck merged to form the Stadtwerke Jena-Pößneck. In 2002, Stadtwerke acquired 94 percent of the shares in the largest Jena housing company (jenawohnen). In 2007 the Jena-Zwätze biogas plant went into operation and in 2008 the Hermsdorf biomass cogeneration plant. Stadtwerke Energie has been supplying its customers with an electricity mix without nuclear power since 2011, and since summer 2013 exclusively with green electricity from European hydropower. In addition, the company primarily relies on energy that is provided by the environmentally friendly process of combined heat and power and operates its own plants for the generation of renewable energies.

In 2011 the group of shareholders of Stadtwerke Energie changed, Thüga AG Munich became a new partner with a share of 20 percent. With effect from January 1, 2012, BürgerEnergie Jena eG, founded in 2011, acquired 2 percent of the shares - the first participation of a citizens' energy cooperative in municipal utilities in a large city in Germany - with the aim of intensifying regional energy generation and the local energy transition together with the citizens to make it tangible. In 2014 , the Renewable Energies Agency recognized the city of Jena as an energy municipality for its commitment .
