Stanisław Musiał

Stanisław Musiał (born May 1, 1938 in Łososina Górna, ( Powiat Limanowski ); † March 5, 2004 in Cracow ) was a Polish Jesuit , philosopher, representative of the cosmopolitan movement in the Polish Catholic Church and advocate of the Polish-Jewish dialogue.

From 1950 to 1952 Musiał studied at the Small Theological Seminary of the Jesuit Order in Nowy Sącz , in 1952 he joined the novitiate of the Jesuit monastery in Stara Wieś ( Subcarpathian Voivodeship ) and was ordained a priest on August 5, 1963.

He continued his studies from 1957 to 1960 at the Ignatianum Academy in Cracow and from 1960 to 1964 at the Pontifical Theological Faculty in Warsaw. He then continued his studies in Rome and Munich .

From 1972 to 1973 he worked for the Polish service of Vatican Radio , and in 1977 as editor. Musiał was also a long-time employee of the Krakauer Wochenblatt Tygodnik Powszechny , member of the editorial board since 1981, and deputy editor from 1990 to 1991.

From 1989 to 1990 he was the director of the Krakow publishing house for the Apostle of Prayer .

Since 1986 he has been a member of the Commission of the Polish Bishops' Conference for the Dialogue with Judaism , since 1995 its secretary. He was also a member of UN Watch .

He was also involved in the removal of the Carmelite monastery from the site of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp .

Musiał wrote scientific treatises on the history of the philosophy of the French Renaissance. His unfinished doctoral thesis was also dedicated to this topic. He has published numerous articles in Tygodnik Powszechny , Gazeta Wyborcza and other magazines.

In 2001 Musiał was awarded the Jan Karski and Pola Nireńska Prize from the Jewish Scientific Institute in New York .

He had many friends among the Krakow intellectuals, and parts of the Catholic hierarchy viewed him with suspicion.

In 2008 the Cracow Club of Christians and Jews "Przymierze" (Alliance) donated the Stanisław Musiał Prize.
