Stanisław Niewiadomski (composer)
Stanisław Niewiadomski (born November 4, 1859 in Soposzyn , Schowkwa district , Austrian Empire , † August 15, 1936 in Lemberg , Poland ) was a Polish composer, conductor, music teacher and critic.
Life
Niewiadomski initially took lessons at the Conservatory of the Galician Music Society with Karol Mikuli and Franciszek Słomkowski and made his debut as a composer in 1880 with the cantata Akt wiary on the 50th anniversary of the November Uprising . He then studied composition with Franz Krenn and piano with August Sturm in Vienna from 1882 to 1885 .
After his return to Lviv, he worked as a music teacher, composer and music critic. He then took lessons from Salomon Jadassohn in Leipzig . He became artistic director of the opera and operetta at the city's Skarbek Theater and worked from 1887 to 1918 as a professor of music theory, music history and choral singing at the Conservatory of the Galician Music Society. As a music critic, he wrote for Gazeta Lwowska and Dziennik Polski .
In the summer breaks he used to travel abroad. He attended opera performances in Munich, Berlin, Dresden, Vienna, Paris and Milan, took lessons from Salomon Jadassohn in Leipzig and studied Francesco Lamperti's method of singing lessons in Italy . From 1885 to 1892 he was the conductor of the Lutnia-Macierz choir , and he also taught at the club's singing school. In 1892 he was responsible for the Polish section of the International Exhibition of Music and Theater in Vienna, headed the celebrations in Luxembourg for the 100th birthday of Frédéric Chopin and was on the board of directors of the first meeting of Polish music and societies in 1913. From 102 to 1914 he wrote he music reviews and columns for Słowo Polskie magazine .
Niewiadomski spent the time of the First World War in Vienna , where he taught at a branch in exile at the Lviv Conservatory and founded a Polish mixed church choir. On his return he directed the opera at the Lviv Theater from 1918-19, where he performed a cycle of operas for the 100th birthday of Stanisław Moniuszko . He was also the editor of Gazeta Muzyczna from 1918 to 1921 .
In 1919 he went to Warsaw and became professor of music aesthetics, music history and instrument studies at the Conservatory. In 1924 he founded the Society for Music Authors and Critics, of which he was a member of the board for several years. He was in the Warsaw Music Society and in 1925 became the first head of the newly established section for contemporary composers. In 1934 he was one of the founding members of the Fryderyk Chopin Institute . In addition, he continued to write as a music critic for numerous magazines. In 1931 he was awarded the Warsaw City Music Prize.
Niewiadomski's works include two symphonies, five concert overtures and a string quartet, as well as more than 500 piano works, songs and choral pieces.
