Stanisław Zawadzki (architect)

Stanisław Zawadzki (* 1743 in Warsaw ; † October 19, 1806 there ) was a Polish architect of the late Baroque and Classicism . He is seen as a pioneer of the Empire style in Polish architecture.

Life

Zawadzki was born in Warsaw in 1743. From 1769 he studied architecture at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome. There he got to know and appreciate Palladianism , named after Andrea Palladio . In 1776 he was made an honorary member of the academy. After returning to Poland, he decided to pursue a military career, in which he achieved the rank of major general in the engineering troops of the Royal Polish Army. He was an architecture professor in cadet training and commanding the corps of engineers in the crown. After his colleague Hilary Szpilowski accused him of faulty designs in the construction of military facilities in Kamieniec Podolski , he was dismissed from military service in 1783. From now on he mainly devoted himself to civil architecture. During the Kościuszko uprising , he worked out plans to defend Warsaw again. In addition to Italy, he also traveled to England and Germany.
