Stanislav Zámečník
Stanislav Zámečník (born November 12, 1922 in Nivnice , Moravia , † June 22, 2011 in Prague ) was a Czech historian and contemporary witness of National Socialism .
Life
At the age of seventeen Zámečník was arrested by German troops. After he was imprisoned in several prisons , the occupiers deported him to the Dachau concentration camp in February 1941 . From autumn 1941 he worked as an orderly in the infirmary of the camp. After four years in prison, he saw the liberation of the camp and returned to his homeland.
He studied history at Charles University in Prague . From 1960 he was at the Military History Institute and did research on the history of the Czech resistance and the history of the Dachau concentration camp.
In August 1968, after the Prague Spring , he lost his job and was forbidden to continue doing his job. After political changes in 1989, he was able to continue historical research unhindered. As a member of the scientific advisory board, he worked on the redesign of the Dachau memorial. On behalf of the Comité International de Dachau , he created the first complete literary account of the Dachau concentration camp.
In 2011, Zámečník was posthumously awarded the Dachau Prize for Civil Courage .
