Stanislaw Pavlovich Michejew

Stanislav Pawlowitsch Michejew , Russian Станислав Павлович Михеев , English Stanislav Mikheyev (* 1940 - 23 April 2011 ) was a Russian physicist . The experimental physicist dealt with neutrino physics , among other things .

Michejew studied at the Lomonosov University in Moscow , where he graduated in 1965. Then he was a researcher at the Lebedev Institute and from 1970 at the Institute for Nuclear Research of the Soviet Academy of Sciences , where he received his Russian doctorate in 1983. For a long time he worked on experiments at the Baksan telescope in the Caucasus , an underground scintillation detector system with which he a. a. looking for super heavy magnetic monopoles . In the 1990s he worked on the MACRO neutrino detector in the Gran Sasso d'Italia . In 2008 he worked on the Baksan telescope, the Baikal neutrino telescope in Lake Baikal and the T2K neutrino experiment in Japan (in which correlations are observed over a 295 km distance between Kamioka and Tokai ).

Michejew became known for his explanation of the riddle of solar neutrinos in 1984/85 with Alexei Smirnow , based on earlier ideas by Lincoln Wolfenstein (1978), the MSW effect named after them . He explains the riddle of the neutrinos from the sun, which are missing in the observations, with neutrino oscillations that are amplified by interaction with matter (electrons).

In 2006 he received the Bruno Pontecorvo Prize with Smirnow and Wolfenstein and the Sakurai Prize in 2008 with Smirnow . In 2008 he received the Markow Prize .
