Stanley Bate
Stanley Richard Bate (born December 12, 1911 in Plymouth , † October 19, 1959 in London ) was an English composer .
Life
Stanley Bate studied from 1932 to 1936 at the Royal College of Music , where he was a composition student of Ralph Vaughan Williams . From 1936 to 1937 he was in Paris student of Nadia Boulanger (and possibly Maurice Ravel ) and at the Academy of Music in Berlin by Paul Hindemith . In 1937 he returned to England and became musical director of the Phoenix Theater in London. In 1938 he married the composer Peggy Glanville-Hicks .
He and his wife traveled through Australia from 1939 to 1940, where he performed as a pianist. He lived in the USA until 1944, where many of his works were successfully performed with him as a soloist. In 1945 he went on a trip through Brazil, where he appeared in front of Heitor Villa-Lobos and directed several radio concerts. Between 1946 and 1949 he lived again in the USA. In 1949 he returned to England and settled in London. At the 10th Cheltenham Annual Festival of British Contemporary Music in 1954, his 3rd symphony was performed with great success. Shortly before his death in 1958 he went on a concert tour to the USA and Yugoslavia.
Bate was a prolific composer. He created operas , ballets and film music, symphonies and instrumental concerts, chamber music works, numerous piano sonatas and songs .
