Stara Wisła

The Stara Wisła ( German Old Vistula ) is a former arm of the Vistula ( Polish Wisła) in Krakow . It flowed in an arc around the former town of Kazimierz and was filled in until 1880.

River course

The arm of the Vistula, about two kilometers long, turned sharply north just before Kazimierz. He reached the Kraków suburb of Wesoła , turned to the former mouth of the Prądniks to the southwest and formed the border between Kazimierz and the suburb of Stradom . In the next arc it flowed to the northwest and reached the main stream shortly before the Wawel Castle Hill .

history

The old Vistula was the main river until the 16th century. This then shifted to the southern arm. Between Stradom and Kazimierz, the salt road ran over the royal bridge. It led through the Christian part of the city via the market square and crossed the southern arm of the Vistula with a second bridge. The northern arm fell partially dry later in the summer.

After the first partition of Poland, the old Vistula represented the border between the imperial Kazimierz and the Polish Krakow for some time. However, the Habsburgs gave Kazimierz back to Poland and instead expanded Podgórze (Podgurze) in 1784 to become Josefstadt .

Ulica Józefa Dietla at night

The old Vistula was seen as a source of disease in the late 19th century. In particular, the doctor and mayor Józef Dietl ( Joseph Dietl , 1804–1878) campaigned for the watercourse to be backfilled. This only took place after his death and was completed by 1880.

The western part of the new boulevard was named ulica Józefa Dietla . It is 100 meters wide. Two streets encompass an almost five hectare green belt (planty) through which the tram runs. - The eastern part is laid out similarly. It was named ulica Wiśliska and was renamed in 1937 after Ignacy Daszyński (1866-1936) in aleja Ignacego Daszyńskiego .

The western part of ulica Józefa Dietla was included in 1978 with Stradom and Kazimierz in the UNESCO World Heritage " Historical Center of Krakow ". The further course of the former river belongs to the buffer zone . It is also part of an area that was declared a historical city complex (historyczny zespół miasta) on September 16, 1994 by presidential decree of Lech Wałęsa as a historical monument (Pomnik historii) .
