Brigadier General States Rights Gist

States Rights Gist (born September 3, 1831 in Union District , South Carolina , † November 30, 1864 in Franklin , Tennessee ) was a brigadier general in the Army of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War .

Life

After attending school in Winnsboro , he graduated from South Carolina College in 1852 and successfully completed his law studies at Harvard University in 1854 . He then joined the South Carolina militia, where he held the rank of brigadier . In the First Battle of Manassas Gist served as a volunteer under Barnard Elliott Bee and took over command after his death. On March 20, 1862, he was appointed Brigadier General. During the Battle of Franklin , States Rights Gist fell in command of John Calvin Brown's division of General Benjamin Franklin Cheatham's corps , under the supreme command of General John Bell Hood , fighting the Northern Army during the Franklin-Nashville campaign .
