The 16th stage of the Tour de France 2008 on July 22nd was 157 kilometers long and ran from Cuneo to Jausiers . There were two sprint classifications and two mountain classifications of the Hors Catégorie on the program.
Sylvain Chavanel immediately started an attack at the real start, other drivers attacked afterwards. However, the field prevented them from getting away at high speed. Later, Chavanel tried again unsuccessfully with George Hincapie . The two made the first intermediate sprint among themselves. David Le Lay then caught up with Chavanel, but fell back again. David Moncoutié launched the next attack, but all attackers were caught again. Christophe Le Mével , Sébastien Rosseler , Thomas Voeckler , Stefan Schumacher and Samuel Dumoulin were finally able to break away, pursued by a group of 24 chasers, including Jens Voigt , Jaroslaw Popowytsch , Cyril Dessel , Haimar Zubeldia , Danny Pate , Marcus Burghardt , George Hincapie, Kanstanzin Siuzou , John-Lee Augustyn , Juan Antonio Flecha and again Chavanel. Dumoulin won the second sprint classification. Then Schumacher set the pace, some drivers fell back again. There were renewed attacks in the field, creating another group of pursuers. Schumacher was the first to reach the top of the pass on the Col de la Lombarde, followed by Le Mevel and Voeckler, which was part of the tour's program for the first time. Arnaud Coyot fell on the descent, but was able to continue. Liquigas led the group of favorites on the second climb of the day to Col de la Bonette, the highest point of the tour. Andy Schleck later increased the pace and the group shrank. Fränk Schleck , Carlos Sastre , Samuel Sánchez , Denis Menschow , Bernhard Kohl , Alejandro Valverde , Cadel Evans and Kim Kirchen drove with him . Before the summit, Schumacher lost his lead over his direct pursuers, whose group consisted of Tadej Valjavec , Dessel, Sandy Casar , Popowytsch, Hincapie, Siuzou, Nicolas Portal , David Arroyo and Augustyn, and was overtaken. Voigt was now in front in the field. Augustyn attacked the mountain classification and secured the points from Dessel and Arroyo, but fell into the slope on the descent, but was able to catch himself. In the descent, several groups formed, Dessel, Casar, Popowytsch and Arroyo at the top. The last two attacked about one km from the target. This was achieved in Jausiers on a 70 meter long and 6.5 meter wide home straight. Dessel, who brought the group back together, won the sprint there. Then the groups around Hincapie and Schleck crossed the finish line. Vandevelde had to accept a time gap of over four minutes. Nibali lost over 5 minutes and had to hand over the white jersey to Andy Schleck.
