The 2nd stage of the Tour de France 2008 on July 6th was 164.5 kilometers long and ran from Auray through Brittany to Saint-Brieuc . A total of three sprint ratings, three mountain ratings in the 4th category and one in the 3rd category were on the program.

At the beginning of the stage, a ten-man leading group tried to break away, but it did not succeed. A trio of Fabian Wegmann , Murilo Fischer and Sylvain Chavanel later formed . After the first mountain classification, which Sylvain Chavanel decided against Thomas Voeckler and Björn Schröder , the first two were able to pull away. They also made the three other mountain ratings among themselves. Chavanel also won all sprint classifications ahead of Voeckler. Later Christophe Moreau and David Le Lay , who was born in the destination and lives here, joined the duo. The quartet was only able to hold out a few kilometers from the goal before the escape group was swallowed up by the field. The finish in Saint-Brieuc was reached on a 220 meter long and 8.5 meter wide home straight. Thor Hushovd was able to successfully assert himself there. Kim Kirchen, who finished second, was able to secure the green jersey.
