The 4th stage of the Tour de France 2008 on July 8th was a 29.5 kilometer individual time trial . It was the first time trial of the 2008 tour and was around Cholet .

There were two split times at kilometer 11 and kilometer 18.

The short time trial distance compared to previous years was without major difficulties. The time trial began with Wim Vansevenant , 178th and last placed, who started at 11.02 a.m. The yellow jersey wearer Romain Feillu started at 16:56. The best time of the American Danny Pate lasted over 2 hours before it was beaten one after the other by Sylvain Chavanel , Jens Voigt , Denis Menschow , Fabian Cancellara and finally by the German Stefan Schumacher . Schumacher's time was not undercut until the end. Cadel Evans failed at this time, as did Kim Kirchen , who could finish second. In addition to the stage, Schumacher also won the yellow jersey and thus became the third wearer in the 2008 Tour. Thomas Lövkvist won the white jersey , who finished eleventh overall. Also Alejandro Valverde , the yellow jersey on the 2nd and 3rd stage, lost ground against Schumacher and a half minutes, which was in the standings only ranked 17. The goal was long on a 780-meter and 6.50 meter wide stretch reached.
