The 6th stage of the Tour de France 2008 on July 10th was 195.5 kilometers long and ran from Aigurande to Super Besse . There were three sprint classifications as well as two mountain classifications in the 4th category and two in the 2nd category, with the last mountain classification being the finish line in Super Besse.

The stage began again with numerous attempts to break away. Sylvain Chavanel started the first successful breakaway attempt at kilometer 6, later Freddy Bichot and Benoît Vaugrenard joined him. But they were only able to slowly gain a lead, which was a maximum of 5:15 minutes, while new drivers from the field tried to catch up to the front. As on the previous day, each of the drivers was able to decide a sprint classification for themselves, but Chavanel was always able to prevail in the mountain classifications, thus securing the jersey . Then he fell back too. Vaugrenard fell back from the top group at Col de la Croix-Morand, while at the same time new attacks were started from the peloton. Bichot was finally overtaken 13 km from the finish. There were more attacks on the final climb. Leonardo Piepoli and Christian Vande Velde were initially able to pull away a little, but did not manage to stay ahead either. The goal in Super Besse was reached on a 180 meter long and 6.5 meter wide home straight. There Riccardo Riccò won , who was able to prevail against Alejandro Valverde and Cadel Evans . Stefan Schumacher was stopped by a fall shortly before the finish and thus lost valuable seconds and thus the yellow jersey that Kim Kirchen was able to secure, who was fifth behind Fränk Schleck and thus also the new leader in the points classification. Kirchen is thus the first Luxembourgish wearer of the yellow jersey since Charly Gaul in 1958. Chavanel was voted the most combative driver for the second time on this tour.
