The 3rd stage of the Tour de France 2008 on July 7th was 208 kilometers long and took the riders from Brittany from Saint-Malo to Nantes . There were only three sprint classifications on the program, there were no mountain classifications on the day section.

Shortly after the start, a group of four made up of Romain Feillu , Samuel Dumoulin , Paolo Longo Borghini and William Frischkorn was able to pull away from the field . The three sprint classes of the day followed shortly afterwards, won by Dumoulin, Longo Borghini and Frischkorn. The group's lead gradually increased to a maximum of 15:30 minutes, but was further reduced by the faster peloton. Just 60 kilometers from the destination, the road was blocked by striking dock workers, which, however, did not hinder the drivers much. When the main field arrived, the blockade was resolved. Since there was disagreement in the field, the outliers were able to save a lead of over two minutes at the finish. Dumoulin won the sprint in Nantes. Feillu was able to secure the yellow and white jerseys with the best placement in the group. In the course of a fall in the main field 25 kilometers from the finish, after which Ángel Gómez had to give up the tour, the field split into several groups, with overall leader Alejandro Valverde in the first group. Denis Menschow and Riccardo Riccò lost 38 seconds to Valverde, Christophe Moreau and Sylwester Szmyd 2:53 minutes. Robbie McEwen won the sprint of the field ahead of Erik Zabel .
