The 11th stage of the Tour de France 2008 on July 16 was 167.5 kilometers long and ran from Lannemezan to Foix . There were two sprint classifications as well as two mountain classifications of the 3rd category and one mountain classification of the 1st category on the program.
The stage began at high speed, which initially thwarted attempts to break away. On the way to the first intermediate sprint, a breakaway group of 13 briefly managed to get away, but was caught up again before the sprint. Leonardo Duque won this intermediate sprint. Then Thomas Voeckler tried to pull away, followed by four drivers, but this attempt also failed. Fabian Wegmann and Kurt Asle Arvesen then started a successful escape attempt, which was initially followed by Martin Elmiger , Alessandro Ballan , Alexander Botscharow , Dmitri Fofonow , Gert Steegmans , Koos Moerenhout , Marco Velo , Benoît Vaugrenard and Amaël Moinard , followed later by Pierrick Fédrigo and Filippo Pozzato and José Vicente García Acosta . Steegmans fell back, however, as he could not keep the pace of the group on the climb. Botscharow won the first mountain classification and Pozzato the second intermediate sprint. The now 13-strong escape group was able to extend the lead to over 16 minutes. Moinard attacked on the way to the Col de Portel and was the first to cross this mountain classification and also the third and final mountain classification of the day. García Acosta also fell behind. Meanwhile, Óscar Pereiro attacked from the field, but was caught again on the descent of the mountain. The goal in Foix was reached on a 290 meter long and 6.5 meter wide home straight. On the way there attacked from the chasing group first Fofonow, later Elmiger and Arvesen, who overtook Moinard, who was still leading. Ballan attacked now and reached the home straight first. There was a photo finish between Arvesen, Ballan and Elmiger, which the former could just win. Thor Hushovd won the sprint of the field, which reached the finish more than 14 minutes later, ahead of Erik Zabel and Leonardo Duque.
