The 8th stage of the Tour de France 2008 on July 12th was 172.5 kilometers long and ran from Figeac to Toulouse . There were three sprint classifications as well as two mountain classifications in the 4th category and two mountain classifications in the third category.
The stage began as restlessly as the day before with unsuccessful attempts to break away. First seven drivers tried to pull away, later a group of three consisting of David de la Fuente , Simon Gerrans and Egoi Martínez . The first mountain classification, which took place nine kilometers after the start, was won by de la Fuente. After the three were caught, first ten, then eleven other drivers tried to break away. All escape attempts were thwarted by the Columbia team , who defended the yellow jersey. Laurent Lefèvre , who won the second mountain classification, was the first to successfully break away at kilometer 35. The pursuit was taken by Amets Txurruka , Christophe Riblon and Jérôme Pineau . Lefèvre was able to achieve a maximum lead of 5:15 minutes before he waited for his pursuers and together they increased the lead, which had meanwhile decreased somewhat, to 5:25 minutes. Lefèvre also won the last two mountain classifications as well as the first and third sprint classifications. Later the gap shrank again and other drivers tried to catch up with the quartet. Txurruka and Pineau finally settled a little, Lefèvre and Riblon were swallowed by the field.
About three kilometers before the finish line, the last two outliers are caught up, so that the sprint finals came again. The goal in Toulouse was reached on a 420 meter long and eight meter wide home straight. There Mark Cavendish celebrated his second stage win of this tour. As a result, Óscar Freire , who finished fourth, was able to secure the green jersey, who now leads the ranking with the same number of points as Kim Kirchen . There were no changes to the other ratings.
