The 7th stage of the Tour de France 2008 on July 11th was 159 kilometers long and ran from Brioude to Aurillac . There were three sprint evaluations as well as two mountain evaluations of the 3rd category, two mountain evaluations of the 2nd category and one mountain evaluation of the 4th category on the program.

Overall, the course of the race was very hectic and characterized by many attempts to break away. Shortly after the start, Christophe Moreau and William Frischkorn made the first attack, but they were caught again. The same thing happened with other runaways who later tried. David Millar was able to secure the first mountain classification , the second Jens Voigt . In doing so, small groups formed several times, but they could not achieve a large lead. A fall in the main field caused the field to break. Later, a 25-man breakaway group formed, before the last three mountains one of Luis León Sánchez , Josep Jufré , David de la Fuente and Vincenzo Nibali . The mountain ratings on the Col d'Entremont , the Pas de Peyrol (the highest road pass in the Massif Central) and the Côte de Saint-Jean-de-Donne each won David de la Fuente, who thus secured the dotted jersey . The finish line in Aurillac was reached on a 1,100 meter long and 7 meter wide home straight. There Sánchez secured the stage win, who was able to pull away again with an attack 4 km from the finish. There were no changes in the overall ranking.
