Cressat is a French municipality with 553 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Creuse in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It belongs to the arrondissement of Aubusson and the canton of Gouzon ( canton Ahun until 2015 ).

Cressat is located in the Massif Central , 44 kilometers southwest of Montluçon , about 18 kilometers north of Guéret , the seat of the prefecture of the department, and 7.7 kilometers northeast of Ahun , the capital of the canton, at an average altitude of 443 meters above sea ​​level . In 1793 Cressat received in the course of the French Revolution (1789-1799) as Crenac the status of a municipality and 1801 through the administrative reform in the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) under the name Cressac the right to local self-government .

Culture and sights

The stained glass windows of the Sainte-Marguerite church were made in the 19th century and restored in 2009. In the church there are several art objects from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, which are entered in the additional directory of the Monuments historiques ('historical monuments'). This includes a 16th century painted statue of Margaret of Antioch with a dragon and a painting depicting the Adoration of the Magi . It is a mirrored copy of the "Adoration of the Magi" by Peter Paul Rubens .
