Cressat is a French municipality with 553 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Creuse in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It belongs to the arrondissement of Aubusson and the canton of Gouzon ( canton Ahun until 2015 ).
geography
Cressat is located in the Massif Central , 44 kilometers southwest of Montluçon , about 18 kilometers north of Guéret , the seat of the prefecture of the department, and 7.7 kilometers northeast of Ahun , the capital of the canton, at an average altitude of 443 meters above sea level . Since the village is located in the mountains, the differences in altitude are great, the Mairie is at an altitude of 520 meters. The village is located on the upper reaches of the Verraux river . The Creuse flows on the southwestern edge of the municipality. Cressat is surrounded by the neighboring municipalities of Vigeville , Saint-Dizier-la-Tour , Chénérailles and Moutier-d'Ahun . The municipality has an area of 3341 hectares.
Cressat is assigned to a climate zone of type Cfb (according to Köppen and Geiger) : Warm, moderate rainy climate (C), fully humid (f), warmest month below 22 ° C, at least four months above 10 ° C (b). There is a maritime climate with a moderate summer.

In 1793 Cressat received in the course of the French Revolution (1789-1799) as Crenac the status of a municipality and 1801 through the administrative reform in the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) under the name Cressac the right to local self-government .
Culture and sights
The stained glass windows of the Sainte-Marguerite church were made in the 19th century and restored in 2009. In the church there are several art objects from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, which are entered in the additional directory of the Monuments historiques ('historical monuments'). This includes a 16th century painted statue of Margaret of Antioch with a dragon and a painting depicting the Adoration of the Magi . It is a mirrored copy of the "Adoration of the Magi" by Peter Paul Rubens .
Economy and Infrastructure
Protected geographical indications (IGP) apply to veal (Veau du Limousin) , lamb (Agneau du Limousin) and pork (Porc d'Auvergne and Porc du Limousin) in the municipality .
In 2009, 23.6 percent of the workforce were employed in the municipality, the others are commuters . 7.3 percent of the employees were unemployed .
The current railway line Montluçon - Saint-Sulpice-Laurière connected Montluçon with Limoges in the 19th century . At that time, the train station in Cressat was approached by trains on this line. Today the nearest train stations are in Ahun (Busseau Sur Creuse) and Lavaveix-les-Mines .
