Soumans is a French municipality with 601 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Creuse in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The village became famous in 1858 when a tin mine from pre-Roman times was found in the district of Montebras. The mineral montebrasite was named after this mine.

Soumans is located in the Massif Central in the northeast corner of the Creuse department, about 90 kilometers northwest of Clermont-Ferrand , 36.3 kilometers northeast of Guéret , the seat of the sub-prefecture of the arrondissement and 8.8 kilometers southeast of Boussac , the capital of the canton , on a mean height of 436 meters above sea ​​level . The Mairie stands at a height of 415 meters. Neighboring municipalities of Soumans are Lavaufranche in the west, Treignat in the north, Verneiges in the south and Bord-Saint-Georges in the southwest. history

The tin mine in the district of Montebras was built by the Celts and was located in the Biturigen area . The mine was used in the Gallo-Roman period (52 BC to 486 AD). After its rediscovery, tin was mined until the First World War (1914-1918), then amblygonite and montebrasite for the production of lithium hydroxide .

In 1793 Soumans received under the name Soument in the course of the French Revolution (1789-1799) the status of a municipality and in 1801 through the administrative reform under Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) under the current name the right to local self-government .

Soumans had the most inhabitants in 1891 (1510). Thereafter the number of inhabitants decreased until 1990 (540). Between 1790 and 1794 Montebras was incorporated, followed by Belle-Fay in 1829.
