Static Age is a studio album by the US punk band Misfits . It was recorded in 1978 and was actually intended as a debut album . However, it wasn't released until 1997 via Caroline Records .

History of origin

After the Misfits single Cough / Cool on Glenn Danzig's own label Blank Records , Mercury Records also released a " Pere Ubu " album under the Blank label . But since Danzig had the naming rights to this record label, an attempt was made to reach an out of court agreement. Mercury Records offered the Misfits 30 hours of free studio time. Danzig accepted and was able to work with Franché Coma, Jerry Only and Jim “Mr. Jim “Catania used CI Recordings Studio in New York City in January and February 1978 . However, the four musicians were only allowed very late or very early hours in the studio. The 30 hours were not enough to produce the album, but the Misfits had prepared well. The complete 17 songs were recorded in two sessions in a row and with just one overdub . Dave Achelis was involved as a producer and sound engineer on the album. Gregor Germain, who also worked as a sound engineer, was not mentioned.

There wasn't enough time to mix all 17 songs. The later cult classics of the Misfits She and Spinal Remains were therefore only published years later on the compilation Legacy of Brutality . In the Doorway remained missing until 1997, while other songs were later released on various EPs and singles. The album in its entirety remained unreleased until 1997.

The album was originally supposed to be released for Halloween 1995, promo posters already existed, but Glenn Danzig first protested and claimed that the original tapes had been destroyed. However, guitarist Franché Coma still had a copy of the recording sessions he provided. The album was first released in 1996 as part of the box set The Misfits Box Set . Eventually Danzig agreed to the publication and passed on a master tape that could be mastered by Alan Douches and Tom Bejgrowicz. This resulted in a better quality than on the previous releases of the songs. She , Spinal Remains and In the Doorway were first mastered by Alan Douches and Tom Bejgrowicz and were not included in the box set. The album also contains two bonus tracks that are not explicitly mentioned: eight minutes of outtakes from the production and 6 seconds of silence.

LP version

A first LP version appeared on July 15, 1997 in a limited edition of 7000 pieces, which were different in color. These were sold in such a way that it was not clear which limitation the buyer was purchasing. The limitations are as follows:

  • 3500 copies of black vinyl
  • 2000 on red
  • 1000 on yellow-orange

and

  • 500 copies on purple vinyl.

The second pressing appeared in black vinyl.

Music style and lyrics

The making of the album influenced the sound of the 17 songs, which sound very raw and harsh. However, the typical Misfits elements, i.e. echoes of poppy melodies and Glenn Danzig's melodious vocals, are also represented on the album. The songs are kept simple and consist of a few chords . Reviewers also compared the sound to Buddy Holly's rock 'n' roll viewed through punk rock sunglasses. The lyrics, which were all written by Gdansk, mostly allude to horror films . Some of the titles are allusions to classic British horror films such as The Return of the Fly (1959) ( Return of the Fly ). The lyrics are black and humorous and full of sex and violence fantasies.

reception

Except for In the Doorway , all of the songs had already been released in one form or another. Never in their entirety, but the songs were already known to most Misfits fans. Ned Raggett of Allmusic doubts whether the somewhat raw production justifies a new purchase for the fans , but he describes the album as essential for newcomer fans.
