Statocytes are specialized cells that occur in plants in the root tip or in molluscs and are used to perceive gravity ( graviperception ). In plants, heavy particles - usually amyloplasts (“statolith starch”) - shift to the underside of the cell. This is registered and the direction of growth is adjusted accordingly by the plant.
