Theodorus Stephanus Gerardus Johannes Marie "Steef" van Schaik (* December 8, 1888 in Druten , Gelderland Province ; † December 10, 1968 in Arnhem , Gelderland Province) was a Dutch entrepreneur , economic manager and politician of the Roomsch-Katholieke Staatspartij (RKSP) as well later the Katholieke Volkspartij (KVP), who for several years was a board member and chairman of the board of the synthetic fiber manufacturer Algemeene Kunstzijde Unie NV (AKU) and between 1945 and 1946 Minister for Transport and Energy in the Schermerhorn / Drees cabinet of Prime Minister Willem Schermerhorn . Life

Van Schaik started after the visit of the Higher Civil school in 's-Hertogenbosch , a degree in mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Delft , which he completed in June 1911th After completing his studies, he began his professional career as an employee at the State Mines (NV Nederlandse Staatsmijnen) in Heerlen , before moving to the art manufacturer NV Algemene Kunstzijde Unie (NV AKU) in 1918 . After he became vice director of the company in 1919, he was a member of the board of NV AKU for the first time between June 26, 1941 and June 25, 1945. In 1938 he was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Orange-Nassau for his services to the economy .

On June 25, 1945, van Schaik, who initially belonged to the Roomsch-Katholieke Staatspartij (RKSP) and from December 22, 1945 to the Katholieke Volkspartij (KVP), was appointed by Prime Minister Willem Schermerhorn to the Schermerhorn / Drees cabinet and held up to it on July 2, 1946 the office of the Minister for Transport and Energy. In this role he campaigned for the construction of the infrastructure destroyed in World War II and the restoration of the fuel supply. After leaving the government, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Dutch Lion on September 17, 1946 .

After leaving the government, he returned to NV AKU on August 1, 1946 as a board member and between August 1, 1948 and July 1, 1954, together with Jo Meynen, served as chairman of the board of NV AKU.

For his services in this function, van Schaik was appointed commander of the Order of Orange-Nassau on July 1, 1954 . On September 26, 1955, the Delft University of Technology also awarded him an honorary doctorate in engineering. In addition, he was a knight of the Order of Gregory .

His marriage to Wilhelmina Amelie van Berckel on May 19, 1914 in Delft resulted in five daughters and five sons.

Steef van Schaik was the younger brother of Josef van Schaik , who was a member and chairman of the Second Chamber of the States General , was a minister several times as well as a member of the Council of State ( Raad van State ) and was also appointed Minister of State in 1951 .
