geography

history

Münzbachtal in the summer of 1958

The Stahlberg Castle above the village was built in the 12th century by the Archbishops of Cologne. As early as 1243 it went together with Fürstenberg as a fief to the Wittelsbach Count Palatine . In the Middle Ages, Steeg was one of the four main towns, known as the “free valleys”, of an area formerly owned by the Archbishops of Cologne, which is still called the “Viertälergebiet” today.

The early humanist and artist Wienand Ort von Steeg (1371-1454), who was appointed secretary to King Sigismund because of his erudition , is one of Steeg's greatest and most important sons.

On June 7, 1969, Steeg was incorporated into the city of Bacharach.

Surname

The place name Steeg is probably derived from "Steige", which referred to a road leading from the Rhine Valley up to the Hunsrück . In the Viertälergebiet and beyond, the nickname of the inhabitants of Steeg is known as the “Steeger Esel”. This name comes from a way of working that was previously practiced in Steeg, which contributed to making work easier, and has nothing to do with the "stupid donkey".

Neighborhoods

So-called well neighborhoods have a long tradition in Steeg . Steeg is still divided into nine neighborhoods: Nauheim, Giebelspforte, Grindel, Hinterweg, Untere Biesel, Obere Biesel, Lennenborn, Mittlere Borbach and Obere Borbach.

Despite the changing times, the neighborhoods are still partly active. The last service of carrying the deceased to their resting place, keeping a neighborhood book in which the events are recorded year after year, and the morning pint meeting on the Sunday at the fair are maintained to this day. Untere Biesel and Obere Biesel take their names from the Bieselbach, Mittlere Borbach and Obere Borbach theirs from the Borbach. Both streams unite in Steeg to form the Münzbach .

economy

In the past, the villagers lived from viticulture , agriculture and forest use. Even today, Steeger Riesling is grown on the steep slopes , sometimes with a slope of more than 60%. The population lives largely from tourism and offers vacation opportunities in the countryside.

politics

Steeg is designated as a local district and therefore has a local advisory board and a local councilor .

The local advisory board consists of seven local advisory board members. In the local elections on May 26, 2019 , the advisory board members were elected in a personalized proportional representation. The distribution of seats in the elected local council:

The main castle is oval, in the west a round tower rises, in the east, at the highest point, a rectangular one.
  • The Protestant St. Anna Church was built in the second half of the 14th century, it is an irregular two-aisled hall church with a south main and north aisle, both closed in the east with an apse, and a tower built into the north aisle. It is worth mentioning some wall paintings from the time it was built and the Stumm organ from 1802, which was re-inaugurated in 2006 after extensive restoration.
