The Steel River is a tributary of Lake Superior in the Thunder Bay District in the Canadian province of Ontario .
The Steel River has its origin in Cairngorm Lake , which it leaves on its north shore. It flows over Esker Lake to the elongated Steel Lake , which it flows through completely from south to north. It flows a short distance in a north-northeast direction until it meets the Little Steel River coming from the north . After the union of the two rivers, the Steel River flows south and reaches Santoy Lake after about 60 km . It flows through it and finally flows into Lake Superior 15 km east of Terrace Bay . The Trans-Canada Highway ( Ontario Highway 17 ) crosses the river at its mouth .
The Steel River has a length of approximately 140 km from the outflow from the elongated Cairngorm Lake to its confluence with the Upper Lake.
The Steel River up to its confluence with the Santoy Lake and part of the river course of its tributary Little Steel River lie in the Steel River Provincial Park .
The river is a destination for canoeists . The so-called Steel Circle Route leads from Santoy Lake via Diablo Lake Portage to Cairngorm Lake. From there, the paddling route leads down the Steel River to the starting point. The 130 km long route can be mastered in 8 days.
