Stefan Bevier (* 1958 in Landau in der Pfalz ; † January 2018 in Berlin ) was a German conductor , musician and concert organizer .

education

Bevier attended the Max Slevogt Gymnasium in Landau in the Palatinate , where he spent his childhood and youth. Since 1967 he had piano and organ lessons. From the seventies he took double bass lessons and completed a four-semester church music seminar as a schoolboy.

After graduating from high school in 1977, he began studying double bass with Rainer Zepperitz and singing with Johannes Hoefflin at the Berlin University of the Arts, as well as studying musicology at the Technical University of Berlin . In 1979 he received a scholarship from the Herbert von Karajan Foundation and studied double bass with Friedrich Witt .

From 1981 he began training as a conductor with Sergiu Celibidache . In 1981 and 1982 Bevier also attended Franz Schuch-Tovini 's master class in Vienna. In 1982 the final examination for double bass took place at the Berlin University of the Arts. His teachers in song interpretation were then Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Aribert Reimann . In 1986 he passed the final exam for singing and music theater at the Berlin University of the Arts.

Artistic career

From 1977 Bevier worked as a voice trainer with the Bach Choir at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church . From 1979 he was a permanent assistant as a double bass player with the Berliner Philharmoniker and began with an international concert career.

From 1988 to 1996 he was chief conductor at StudioChor Berlin . In 1988 Bevier founded the free professional chamber choir "European Vocal Soloists". From 1990 to 1994 he was general music director of the Polish Philharmonic Wałbrzych . From 1991 to 1997 Bevier was the choir director of the Stadtsingechor zu Halle . From 1992 he was principal conductor of the Wroclaw Chamber Orchestra Leopoldinum for seven years.

From 1994 to 1998 Stefan Bevier was first conductor of the Szczecin Philharmonic Orchestra and permanent guest conductor of the choir of the Technical University of Szczecin. In 1994 Bevier was guest conductor of the Russian National Orchestra Moscow and the Moscow Chamber Choir. Since 1997 he has been chief conductor of the Barock Orchester Berlin and since 1999 Guest-Chorus-Master of the Philharmonia Chorus London, which appointed him first Associate Chorusmaster in 2004 and a little later Principal Guest Chorusmaster. Stefan Bevier has been Chorus Master of the Philharmonia Chorus London since 2010. In 1999 Bevier founded the Festival Orchestra Berlin.
