Stefan Gottfried Frauendorf (born February 3, 1945 in Werdau , Saxony ) is a German physicist who works in the field of theoretical nuclear physics .

Life

Stefan Frauendorf studied physics at the TU Dresden from 1963 to 1968 and received his doctorate there in 1971 with the thesis Investigation of the rotational movement of atomic nuclei with the help of the projection method; In 1982 he completed his habilitation. From 1968 he was a research assistant at the Central Institute for Nuclear Research (ZfK) of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR in Rossendorf . From 1971 to 1974 he was a postdoctoral fellow at the United Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna and from 1981 to 1982 visiting professor at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville . He was also a visiting scientist at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen several times . Since 1999 he has been Professor of Physics at the University of Notre Dame in the US state of Indiana .

His research concerns especially fast rotating atomic nuclei and their symmetry properties, proton-neutron pair correlations in proton-rich nuclei and the stability of super-heavy nuclei with an atomic number Z> 110, atomic clusters, magnetic properties of mesoscopic systems and phase transitions in small systems.

Frauendorf has published more than 250 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals; It currently has an H-index of 44. In 1983, he received the GDR national prize, 2nd class for science and technology, for his contributions to the theory of collective forms of motion in atomic nuclei with a research collective at the ZfK Rossendorf . In 2003 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society for his groundbreaking work on rotating nucleus physics. In 2012 he was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science .
