Stefan Herman

Stefan Herman (born July 16, 1902 in Warsaw ; † April 3, 1981 in Danzig ) was a Polish violinist and music teacher .

Hermann attended the Salesian High School in Sokołów Podlaski and from the age of fourteen took violin lessons from Józef Jarzębski in Warsaw. From 1925 he studied at the philological faculty of the University of Warsaw . He continued his musical education from 1926 to 1934 at the Warsaw Music Academy with Jarzębski and Irena Dubiska . In 1938 he attended the piano class of Claude Lamoureux in Paris and at the same time took violin lessons from Henri Marteau and Bronisław Huberman .

As a violinist, he appeared in Warsaw from 1936 on, among others with the Polish National Philharmonic . From 1933 he directed the violin lessons at the Wszechnica Muzyczna . During the occupation he gave private lessons in Warsaw and performed at concerts organized by Zygmunt Latoszewski . After the war he settled in Sopot and taught there at the State University of Music (later the Danzig Music Academy ) as a lecturer, associate professor and, from 1975, full professor.

He also produced radio broadcasts, organized concerts and gave private lessons. His pupils included, inter alia, Konstanty Andrzej Kulka , Edward Zbigniew Zienkowski , Joanna Madroszkiewicz , his daughter Krystyna Herman , Zygmunt Marek Kowalski , Mirosława Pawlak , Magdalena Suchecka , Anna Preyss , Janusz Zis , Aldona Cisewska , Maciej Sobczak and Seweryn Krajewski .

Herman wrote theoretical works on violin lessons, didactic compositions and studies on the works of other composers and has acted as a juror in violin competitions in Poland and abroad. He was awarded the Officer's Cross and the Knight's Cross of the Order Polonia Restituta .
