HISS is a German folk-rock - polka band from Stuttgart , since 1995 there and since then eight albums released and several television appearances and radio features has completed.

history

The story of HISS begins in the spring of 1995 in Stuttgart, when Stefan Hiss ( accordion , vocals ) formed the band together with his bandmates Volker Schuh ( bass ), Michael Roth ( harmonica ), Andi Feller ( guitars , mandolin ) and Patch Pacher ( drums ) founds. Her predecessor band Erich und das Polk was left collectively. In the summer and autumn of the same year, the first appearances at festivals and in clubs follow.

The line-up of HISS has hardly changed since then. Patch Pacher left the band in August 2000 and Jochen Ritter became the new drummer. In January 2003 Patch Pacher returned to the drums and Thomas Grollmus replaced Andi Feller on guitars and mandolin. Another change did not take place until nine years later, when Bernd Öhlenschläger followed Patch Pacher on drums.

HISS caused a stir with the Negerpolka , with which the band got a record deal with Intercord . In 1997, the title for the Rio Reiser song award was nominated in 2001 by Cornelsen for a lesson against xenophobia in the textbook Durchstarten added. With the title Come dance with me , HISS took part in the ZDF hit parade in 1998 , where they achieved third place.

With their CD Polka für die Welt (2003), on which HISS presents the polka as a global phenomenon in selected cover versions from all over the world - for example from Texas, Mexico, Finland and Transylvania - the band gained increased attention on cultural radio, which ultimately led to Awarding of the German World Music Prize RUTH in the "German Roots" category at TFF.Rudolstadt , one of the most important and largest folk festivals in Europe. HISS celebrated their tenth anniversary in 2005 with the release of a live CD and DVD. In the autumn of the same year, the film Zur Sonne was shot, in which the band HISS is at the center of a fictional story. The film premiered in Offenburg in March 2007.

portrait

The style of HISS, which the band defines itself as Polka'n'Roll , is an idiosyncratic mixture of folk music roots of all kinds with rock and roll . Blues , country and Latin American influences play a role as well as polka and waltz . The accordion as lead instrument, the vocals by Stefan Hiss and the harmonica by Michael Roth form the basis of the typical Hiss sound.

HISS are best known for their tireless touring, which takes them to stages all over Germany around 80-100 times a year.

On stage, the band cultivates an image permeated by wild west romance and vagabond clichés, which is also reflected in many of their lyrics. The lyrics of the band and their performances can partly be understood as music cabaret.
