Stefan Lippe

Stefan Lippe (born October 11, 1955 in Mannheim ; † March 27, 2020 ) was a German-Swiss insurance manager. From February 2009 to January 2012 he was CEO of Swiss Re .

Career

Lippe studied mathematics and business administration at the University of Mannheim and received his doctorate in 1982 as a scientific assistant to the chair for insurance science. For his dissertation , he was awarded the Kurt Hamann Foundation Prize.

In October 1983 he joined Bayerische Rück , a subsidiary of the Swiss Reinsurance Company . In 1986 he became head of the underwriting department , non-proportional business . In 1988 he was appointed to the management as a deputy member. In 1991 he took over overall responsibility for the company's activities in the German-speaking area and was accepted as a full member. In 1993 he was appointed Chairman of the Management Board of Bayerische Rück and in 1995 he was appointed to the extended management team of Swiss Re as Head of the Bayerische Rück Group. In 2001 he took over the management of the Property & Casualty Business Group and was elected to the executive board of Swiss Re. In September 2008 he was appointed Chief Operating Officer and Deputy CEO. On February 12, 2009, following the dismissal of Jacques Aigrain , he was appointed President of the Executive Board in a crisis situation .

During his tenure, Lippe has been criticized several times in the media and in scientific studies for being overpaid, especially in rankings that compare performance with salary.

In December 2011, after a three-year term in office, his resignation was surprisingly announced. His successor was Michel M. Liès on February 1, 2012 , who was always in tension with Lippe within the company.

In spring 2020, Lippe died at the age of 64 during the COVID-19 pandemic of the consequences of a SARS-CoV-2 infection.
