Stefan M. Gergely (born March 29, 1950 in Vienna ) is an Austrian journalist and non-fiction author .

Life

After attending the secondary school for music students in Vienna and graduating from high school in 1969, he studied organic chemistry at the University of Vienna and the cello at the Academy for Music and Performing Arts (today: University for Music and Performing Arts ) in Vienna. In 1973 he passed the concert qualification examination for violoncello, in 1974 he obtained the title Mag. Rer. nat. and in 1976, with a dissertation on bile pigments, the title Dr. rer. nat. Gergely then completed his military service and a study visit at the Center d'Etudes Nucléaires de Saclay near Paris. In 1977 he started as a freelance science journalist for the Austrian news magazine profil , from 1978 he also worked for the Austrian broadcasting company, the Süddeutsche Zeitung and Die Zeit .

Gergely authored several non-fiction books on microelectronics, food and nutrition, data protection and the Chernobyl reactor accident. He is u. a. Winner of the Austrian State Prize for journalistic achievements in the interests of science and research, the Cardinal Innitzer Promotion Prize for scientifically sound journalism and the “Nürnberger Trichter” book prize from the German Federal Employment Agency , formerly the Federal Employment Agency. In addition to his work as a science journalist, Gergely carried out studies on behalf of the Austrian ministries for trade, commerce and industry (1978), for health and environmental protection (1981) and for the Federal Ministry for Science and Research (1983 ff.). From 1990 Gergely built up gastronomic establishments in Vienna-Margareten and renovated essential parts of the listed buildings that go back to Margareten Castle.

In 2013 he wrote the crime thriller Satansbraut together with Edith Kneifl . In 2014 he organized the U19 chamber music competition for young musicians with Barbara Gisler-Haase and Heinrich Schiff . In 2015 he was given the professional title of Professor. In 2016 Gergely founded the agricultural business Guntrams 11 KG together with Reinhard Adelsberger.
