Stefan Pehringer (* 1969 in Bad Aussee ) is an Austrian diplomat .

Stefan Pehringer comes from the Ausseerland . He attended elementary school, secondary school and high school in Bad Aussee. From 1987 he studied law at the University of Vienna (PhD 2004), in 1995 he also completed post-graduate studies in European law at the University of Göttingen and the multi-stage selection process for the foreign service (Examen préalable). In 1995/96 he was a member of the municipal council of the municipality of Bad Aussee for the SPÖ .

Pehringer's diplomatic career began in 1996 at the Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs  (BMaA). In July 1999 he was sent to the Embassy in Berlin as Secretary of the Embassy in Germany, and in December 2003 he was Deputy Ambassador (Minister-Counselor) in Copenhagen , with Iceland; Ambassador Erich Buttenhauser . In October 2006 he returned to the back office, worked in the department for relations with the USA and Canada, from April 2009 he was head of the East Asia division and until August 2011 head of the UNESCO division in the Foreign Ministry. August 2011 he was appointed Austrian ambassador to Latvia .

From 2007 to 2011 Pehringer was chairman of the staff representation at the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs.

In June 2014, Stefan Pehringer joined the cabinet of Federal Chancellor Werner Faymann at the Federal Chancellery as a foreign policy advisor . There he was particularly involved in coping with the refugee crisis in Europe from 2015 , for example as the Austrian coordinator in setting up the EU hotspots in Greece and Italy. After the resignation of Chancellor Faymann, Stefan Pehringer moved to the office of National Council President Doris Bures, where he also worked as a foreign policy advisor. At the beginning of 2017, Pehringer took over the management of the Austrian Embassy in Ottawa (Canada).

His non-professional engagement includes, for example, the moderation of the annual Altaussee Kirtag (until 2014) or membership in the board of trustees of SK  Rapid Wien (from 2009).
