Stefan Schennach (born August 31, 1956 in Biberwier ) is an Austrian politician (formerly Greens , SPÖ since September 2010 ), cultural manager, lecturer and journalist. He has been a member of the Federal Council since 2001 .

Schennach attended elementary school from 1962 to 1967 and secondary school from 1967 to 1971. He then graduated from a Tyrolean commercial school from 1971 to 1974 and then from 1974 to 1976 the Academy for Educators and Pedagogy . From 1976 to 1977 he completed the evening high school diploma in Vienna , then from 1977 to 1980 he attended the social academy for employed people with a focus on probation assistance and young people in the labor market. Schennach did his community service with the Catholic youth in Vienna and in the Austrian youth council for development aid.

Professionally, Schennach initially worked as an educator in the SOS Children's Village Imst , then from 1977 to 1978 he worked as an educator in the child's Europahaus. In 1979 he was a founding member of the Austrian Information Service for Development Policy (ÖIE) and was also involved in founding the Südwind bookstore and delivering books that year. Schennach also became managing director of Südwind in 1979 and from 1979 was the publishing director and chief editor of the monthly magazine EPN (today Südwind ).

Schennach has been working as a probation officer for young people since 1980 and from 1980 to 1988 he was the head of community service at the ÖIE. He also worked as a journalist for the magazines Falter and Die Furche as well as the daily newspaper Der Standard . As a result, Schennach held the office of press spokesman for the Green Club between 1988 and 1992, and between 1992 and 2001 took over the position of federal press spokesman for the Greens. Schennach also works as a lecturer for various institutions and is a trainer for rhetoric, communication and presentation techniques. In 2003 he became the restructuring officer of the Vienna Academy, and in 2004 he finally took over the management of the Orchestra Wiener Akademie GmbH and Daphne music & arts consulting GmbH.

politics

Schennach has been a district councilor in Döbling since 1991 and was the club chairman of the Döbling Greens between 1991 and 2005. He was also a member of the regional executive committee of the Green Alternative Vienna from 1989 to 1990 and chairman of the district conference of the Vienna Greens from 1998 to 2001 . On April 27, 2001, he was sworn in as a member of the Federal Council, where he was chairman of the Federal Council of the Greens between 2003 and 2008. Schennach lost the presidency because the Greens lost their club strength after the state elections in 2008.

Schennach was also a member of the ORF Board of Trustees from 2000 to 2002, and from 2001 to 2003 a mediator in matters relating to the return of cultural goods between Ukraine and Germany. From 2001 to 2010 he was media spokesman for the Greens and from 2001 a member of the board of the Austrian-Russian friendship group.

On September 1, 2010, he resigned from the Greens and has been a party member of the Vienna SPÖ ever since.
