Stefan Wallner (born July 2, 1971 in Graz ) is an Austrian politician and former Secretary General of Caritas Austria . From December 2009 to December 2016 he was federal manager of the Greens . In February 2020 he was appointed Secretary General in the Ministry of Social Affairs under Minister Rudolf Anschober starting in March 2020. In June 2020 he became head of the cabinet of Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler in the Federal Ministry for Art, Culture, Public Service and Sport .

Life

Wallner graduated from the Academic Gymnasium in Graz . He then studied law, political science and history in Graz and Vienna. In 1992 he became general secretary of the Catholic University Youth and from 1995-1998 was a research project assistant in the field of social policy at the Julius Raab Foundation. After doing his civilian service at Caritas in 1996/97 , he worked there as an employee and was most recently General Secretary of Caritas Austria. In November 2009 he left this “dream job” to “enter into a 'love marriage, not a marriage of convenience' with the Greens”.

On December 4, 2009, Wallner was elected federal executive director in the extended federal executive committee of the Greens. He succeeded Michaela Sburny in this role . In November 2014 he was re-elected as federal manager. One day after the federal presidential election in Austria in 2016 , in which the candidate Alexander Van der Bellen, supported by the Greens, emerged victorious, Wallner announced to the Austria Press Agency on December 5, 2016, without giving any reason, that he would withdraw politically at the end of 2016. Robert Luschnik was elected as his successor.

From 2017 to February 2020 he headed the Brand Management and Company Transformation department of Erste Group , after which he was Secretary General at the Federal Ministry for Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection until May 2020 . In June 2020 he took over the position of Head of Cabinet in the Federal Ministry for Art, Culture, Public Service and Sport . Ines Stilling succeeded him as General Secretary in the Federal Ministry for Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection .
