Stefan Worth (born November 14, 1985 in Cologne ) is a German professional boxer . He is the current international German welterweight champion and is 338th in the world rankings.

background

Stefan Worth was born as the second of four children to a family of doctors in Cologne. He spent his childhood in the Lindenthal district. In 2006 he obtained his Abitur at the Rodenkirchen Comprehensive School. Worth studied civil engineering for four semesters at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences before he was given the opportunity to study at the renowned German Sport University . In 2013 he successfully completed his B.Sc. Sport and performance. In his bachelor thesis, Worth dealt with the effects of EMS training on the maximum strength and sprinting ability of professional football players.

Amateur career from 2004 to 2009

At the age of 14, Stefan Worth started boxing at SC Colonia 06 . There he was, among other things, International West German Junior Champion. After three years, he moved to the club pugilist Köln-Kalk 1951 in 2007 . At the age of 19, Worth boxed one season for BC Ringfrei Mülheim (Ruhr) in the Bundesliga. In total, Worth completed over 70 amateur fights, including in the major league, the Bundesliga and at international tournaments.

Professional career since 2009

Stefan Worth has a record of 15 wins, one draw and two defeats in 18 professional fights. He is the current international German welterweight champion. Worth had the first professional fight on May 9, 2009 against Mehmet Tanriverdi in Weißenthurm near Koblenz.

2010: Fight for the IBF Junior World Championship

After only six professional fights (five wins, one draw) Worth fought against Rico Schultz in Berlin for the vacant junior world championship in the light middleweight division according to the IBF version . He lost the gripping fight unluckily due to a technical knockout in the last round. The bout, under the supervision of IBF Chairman Lindsey Tucker, was retrospectively selected as the 2010 bout of the year by the association.

2010: International German Champion

After a series of four more victories, Worth climbed into the ring on November 20, 2010 against Tom Reiche in Aachen to win the vacant International German Championship. Worth clearly dominated the fight and won his first professional title. It was also the first fight under his new trainer Manfred Gebauer.

2011: First fight in Cologne in the opening act of Vitali Klitschko

In his first and only fight in front of a home crowd, Worth won on March 19, 2011 after six rounds against the Hungarian Ferenc Zold. The fight took place in front of a large backdrop in the Lanxess Arena Cologne in the preliminary program of the fight for the WBC World Championship between Vitali Klitschko and Odlanier Solís . Half a year after his victory in Aachen, Worth defended his International German Championship on May 7, 2011 in Nienburg in a brutal fight against the Turkish Harun Akcabelen. After ten rounds of hard fighting, the Cologne-based man was ultimately able to prevail and thus brought Akcabelen the first defeat.

2011: Narrow defeat for the international title of the WBF

On November 26, Worth boxed for the international welterweight title according to the WBF version against Loic Fouré in Saint-Maur, France. When he stopped attacking the visibly ailing Frenchman in the eighth round due to his missing face mask, he missed the chance of an early victory. In an even fight he had to admit defeat on points in the end. Because of his fairness, there was standing applause from the 2000 French spectators after the fight.

After an eleven month break from fighting, Worth fought hard on October 13, 2010 against the Croatian Almin Kovacevic in Güssing, Austria. Despite a swollen eye after a few rounds, he continued to box and in the end won his 16th professional fight.

Since May 23, 2013, Stefan Worth can call himself International German Champion again. As part of the IBF Convention in Berlin, he won against Alexander Mengis (* 1981), who had not yet been defeated, in the eighth round after being knocked out. Tragically, Mengis hit his head so unhappily during the knockout that he had to be put into an artificial coma after a concussion.
