The Steffan von Cronstetten family (until 1621: Steffan ) was a patrician family in Frankfurt am Main .

The family came from Bingen am Rhein . In 1451 Henn Steffan († 1475), also known as Stephanshenn , received Frankfurt citizenship . He had the house on the Golden Button built in Sandgasse , which from 1776 belonged to the Brentano family. The family quickly became wealthy through the trade in cloth and silk; as early as 1465/66 Steffan was accepted into the patrician societies Zum Frauenstein and Laderam . He donated the Steffanskapelle at the Barfüßerkirche , which was the hereditary burial of the Steffan family until the church was demolished in 1786.

The Steffan family provided 21 mayors of Frankfurt between 1524 and 1724 . On March 14, 1559 presented Emperor Charles V in Vienna the brothers Steffan a crest letter from. On September 14, 1621, Emperor Ferdinand II raised the four brothers Johann, Hieronymus, Daniel and Johann Adolph Steffan to the nobility under the name of Steffan von Cronstetten .

In 1731 the male line died out. The last name bearer was Justina Katharina Steffan von Cronstetten , who died on September 20, 1766 in Frankfurt. She created the Cronstett and Hynspergian Protestant Foundation in Frankfurt am Main , which is still in existence today and which had its seat in the late 19th century at Lindenstrasse 27 in Frankfurt's Westend . Cronstettenstrasse in Frankfurt's Nordend district is a reminder of the family .
