Steffen Diefenbach

Steffen Diefenbach (* 1968 ) is a German ancient historian .

Steffen Diefenbach studied history and Latin from 1989 to 1998 at the Universities of Bochum , Oxford and Freiburg . This was followed by doctoral studies with Johannes Hahn at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster from 1999 to 2004 . During this time, Diefenbach was a research assistant at the historical seminar at the University of Erfurt in 2002/2003 , and in 2003/2004 a research assistant at Gregor Weber's chair for ancient history at the University of Augsburg . The doctorate was completed in 2004 with the grade summa cum laude ; the topic of the dissertation supervised by Johannes Hahn was Roman Remembrance Rooms. Memory of saints and collective identities in Rome from the 3rd to 5th centuries AD. The work was published in 2007 and is now considered a standard work. After completing his doctorate, Diefenbach became a research assistant at the Chair of Ancient History at the University of Augsburg in 2004 and remained in this position until 2010, interrupted by parental leave in 2007/2008. In 2009 he became an academic councilor in Augsburg before he was appointed to a junior lecturer's position (with tenure track ) for political cultures of antiquity at the University of Konstanz in 2010 . In 2015/16 he was a fellow at the cultural studies college . Since October 2016 he has been teaching in Konstanz as a university lecturer ( W2 ) for political cultures of antiquity.

Diefenbach's research focuses primarily on late antiquity , where he works in particular on the Christianization of the Empire and on episcopal rule in Gaul . Another field of work is the Hellenistic monarchy .
